42. LA SOLEDAD
The Night Cafe (1888) Vincent Van Gogh
Night Cafe at Arles (1888) Paul Gauguin
La Soledad
(2023) Oil on Panel, 8" x 6"
This painting belongs to my project, GRID: 100 Mini Paintings, an exploration of composition. The hundred paintings are meant to act as a body of work, created over a ten-month timeline to mimic digital albums with a chronological hierarchy such as Instagram, Google or Apple Photos. This work references Van Gogh's The Night Cafe (1888), which was reinterpreted by Gauguin in his work, At the Cafe (1888). The image depicts my dog, Golda, who won't cross the threshold into my kitchen where I make my paintings. The title references her loneliness and mine and our mutual longing for companionship; hers to play with me and mine to be in conversation with artist peers through our work.
