PRIVATE COLLECTION
EMERALD VINYL (2021) oil on panel 24” x 48”
This painting is one of ten from a body of work about close friends and family, generations, patterns and the passage of time. After returning from Mexico in mid-2022, I reworked the original painting using a method I learned in Oaxaca using layers of transparent oil paint diluted with linseed oil. This process added depth and combined the colors in chromatic scales with each layer giving the painting an illusion as though it is glowing.
This painting has some metaphorical symbols representing change and power and the courage to realize your power to affect that change. The image contains symbols of the evil eye, snakes, and labyrinths. The sofa is one that has been in my studio for many years. I have a feeling it is not going to make it onto the truck the next time I move so this painting is my farewell to a good piece of furniture. I’m really going to miss this hard, vinyl sofa - sticky in the summer and cold like marble in the winter.
