CRUEL SUMMER

(2024) 8” x 6” Oil on Board

One day, there was an american girl walking through the market, she had a half shirt and bike shorts under a long trailing see-through skirt that had big slits in the side and billowed out behind her when she walked. She wore boots and had huge headphones covering her ears. She was holding a huge slurpee cup with a margarita in it and had a blissful look on her face. I watched her walk by and thought of how strange it was for us to be in such close proximity - she was on vacation in Mexican Disneyland and I was in a very, dark, very dangerous situation. The painting is of her, what I can remember, standing in front of the house.

This painting is from the project GRID:100 Mini Paintings by Andonia Giannakouros. The project was funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Dubuque.
